The Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS) of the Museu Nacional at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was created in 1968 and is Brazil´s first postgraduate course in Social Anthropology.
Since its foundation, the Program has developed an innovative model to articulate research to teaching, thus producing original knowledge on sociocultural reality whilst, at the same time, training young researchers and lecturers. The PPGAS has an open and multidisciplinary view of anthropology and the social sciences and promotes the practice of ethnographic, historical and comparative approaches.
The program´s diversity of areas of activity is shown in the dynamism of its research centers and laboratories, in its collective projects funded by both national and international agencies, and in its linkage between linguistics and social anthropology, unique amongst Brazilian institutions.
The PPGAS is a leading institution in the internationalization of the social sciences in Brazil. Both university teachers and students take part in various international networks carrying out agreements, joint research and exchange programs.
In addition do undertaking research in most of Brazil, Program members also carry out studies in other South American as well as Caribbean, African and European countries. Their thriving production is published in the Program´s journal, Mana. Studies of Social Anthropology, which is one of the main journals in social sciences of the country, with wide international recognition.
University teachers, students and visiting fellows use the Francisca Keller Library, one of the most important libraries in social sciences of Brazil, providing both printed and digital resources. Students have access to research infrastructure, grants for master, PhD. and Post-doctoral levels, and research funding for fieldwork and attending scientific events.
The Program´s academic Excellency has been for many years rewarded by the CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Pessoal de Nível Superior), from Brazil´s Ministry of Education, and since the beginning it has consistently achieved the highest evaluation score (seven).
Over the years, the PPGAS has stood out in the education of professionals who, today as in the past, find their place of work in teaching and research institutions in Brazil and abroad, as well as in governmental and non-governmental agencies.
