The PPGAS holds a unified view of postgraduate studies and sees the Master´s course as the first step towards the completion of a doctoral degree. The PPGAS also offers various post-doctoral internships.

Master´s studies

Candidates admitted to the Master´s degree after passing the selection exam have up to 36 six months to complete eight courses and defend their Master´s dissertation. Six courses are theoretical, two of which (Anthropological Theory I and II) are compulsory. The two other courses are a Master´s Seminar with the student´s supervisor and an open choice course (theoretical, theoretico-practical or practical). Dissertations are examined by three university teachers, including the student´s supervisor.

Doctoral studies

Phd studies are aimed at producing original research and theses with substantial contributions to the anthropological understanding of social and cultural life. Candidates admitted to the doctoral degree after passing the selection exam have up to 48 months to complete 16 courses in total. Courses taken during the Master´s degree may count for up to 50% of PhD courses required. Research activity also counts to fulfill credit requirements but students must attend at least four regular courses. PhD theses must be defended before completing the 48 months period and examined by five university teacher, including the student´s supervisor.

Postdoctoral internships
Postdoctoral activities are available to candidates holding a PhD. degree in any area of knowledge. Candidates must approach a PPGAS teacher to request postdoctoral supervision and submit to the PPGAS´s board of studies a letter of presentation, a CV and a work plan describing research and other academic activities to be carried out. Post-doctoral internships are held for at least a year.  When completing the period, a final report must be submitted for approval, upon which the PPGAS issues a postdoctoral certificate.
