NuAP — Center for the Antropologic of Politics
The Center for the Anthropology of Politics (NuAP) was founded in 1997. Originally based at the PPGAS, at present the NuAP gathers researchers of various institutions in Brazil (UFRJ, UnB, UFC, USP, UFF, etc), brought together by the original Project, titled “An Anthropology of Politics: rituals, representations and violence”, and funded by PRONEX – Programa de Apoio a Núcleos de Excelência. The Project´s general purpose was to understand, at the same time, two meanings of politics: as a unification principle, designating “political communities” (or parties, cites, nations) ; and as a specific domain (a world of professionals with its own rules and values). The Project´s focus falls upon the intersections between that which, from the native point of view is conceived of as “politics”, and that held as belonging to other domains of social and cultural life (such as family, market or religion). Through the ethnography of strategically chosen events, situations, rituals and social processes, the aim is to reveal the social and cultural meanings of politics in Brazil. The ethnographical research produced by the original project brought together three key dimensions of political anthropology: the study of political rituals, the representations of politics and violence within politics. Upon completion of the original project in 2005, various other Projects held in the different institutions involved have unfold and developed these topics. The network of institutional cooperation and dialogue around common interests include the organization of events and publications. |
