Institutional quotas – CNPq, CAPES and FAPERJ
The PPGAS seeks to ensure study bursaries for all Master´s and PhD. Students through the institutional quotas yearly provided by CAPES (Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Pessoal de Nível Superior), CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico) and FAPERJ (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro).
Candidates passing the selection examination are not automatically granted a bursary. The politics of distribution of the bursaries yearly provided to the PPGAS through the institutional quotas of CAPES (Fundação Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Pessoal de Nível Superior), CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico) and FAPERJ (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro), depends on available resources.
Upon passing the selection examination and during registration at the PPGAS secretary, students of all nationalities may apply to a study bursary. Eligibility criteria respond to the demands of funding agencies and the PPGAS. These criteria include exclusive dedication to studies, sitting a minimum number of courses per semester and achieving scores and socioeconomic criteria.
Bursaries to spend a period abroad (“sándwich”)
PhD. Students may spend a period in foreign institutions. CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ offer bursaries for doctoral internships abroad (known as “sandwich), following their own criteria and schedules. Candidates and their supervisors are responsible for choosing the funding agency and the foreign institution. The PPGAS may back up their choice or deny authorization.
Others modalities of funding
Candidates of all nationalities who have received funding from other governmental or non-governmental institutions, national or foreign, in order to carry out their Master´s or doctoral studies must go through the PPGAS selection process fulfilling all the requirements described in the PPGAS Calling for the selection examination. Upon approval, students holding such grants are not allowed to apply to the bursaries provided by CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ.
Fundings for fieldwork and attending scientific events
Every year the PPGAS publishes callings for funding fieldwork and attending scientific events open to Master´s and PhD. Students.
A variety of postdoctoral grants are provided by governmental and non-governmental funding agencies, national and foreign. Posdoctoral candidates are responsible for seeking funding in agreement with their PPGAS supervisors.
Funding agencies publish yearly callings supporting postdoctoral internships through institutional quotas. In such cases, candidate selection procedures vary according to the number of grants, the schedules and the criteria laid out by each agency, and by PPGAS´s internal selection mechanisms.
